Greetings:
The
May 8th Primary Election is quickly approaching and
I have been working hard to solidify passage of Issue
12 - the police levy on the ballot. Since my last newsletter,
the campaign has kicked into full swing, with volunteers
making phone calls and knocking on doors to ensure residents
understand how crucial this levy is for Parma.
The
need for a fully staffed police department is critical
if our neighborhoods and businesses are to remain safe.
Presently, Parma only has 86 officers to guard the city
24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This number is down
from over 100 officers just a few years ago - a drastic
reduction in force that puts this city, its residents,
and its businesses at risk.
Issue
12 will provide much needed funding to bolster police
presence in our neighborhoods, purchase equipment needed
to fight crime, and enable the police department to
increase traffic enforcement, especially in the school
zones.
The
average homeowner, with a home worth $136,000, would
see an increase of about $7 per month in property tax
if Issue 12 passes. I realize our residents need every
cent they earn, but I believe this is a small amount
to keep Parma safe and to keep property values strong.
Also,
late last month, Parma City Council passed the City's
budget for 2007. Although it was a $45 million budget,
it constitutes the leanest in years. The lean budget
is due in part because the City's General Fund has been
supporting the police budget since 2005.
Despite
the lean budget, I feel that economic development must
be a priority for Parma. To reflect this belief, I created
an "economic development" line-item with my direct control
to fund related efforts in the City. With my oversight,
my administration hopes to use this money to provide
tools for businesses looking to move to Parma, create
marketing tools for the City, in hopes of continuing
to make Parma a place were people want to raise a family
and grow a business.
Lastly,
I am proud to announce my 4th Annual Charity 5K Run
& 2K Fun Walk. The race will again benefit Holy Family
Home located on State Road in Parma. The race is also
being held in memory of my friend, Ron Jonila, the former
President of the UAW Local 1005.

I thank you in advance for your support of this great
family event!
I
also want to thank you for your continued interest in
my efforts for the City of Parma. I encourage you to
share these messages with friends and family, and please
don't hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Dean DePiero Mayor of Parma
